BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB women's tennis team opens up the 2014 season under new head coach Mark Tjia on Sunday, when the Blazers travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for a match against No. 24 Florida State.
Tjia was named head coach of the Blazers' women's tennis program on Friday and will join the team in Tallahassee for Sunday's contest.
The Blazers are set for the season-opener following an impressive fall, when several Blazers won their respective flights in the 2013 fall tournaments. Newcomer and UAB freshman Catherine Ragon took home a win in the No. 5 draw at the Steve Baras Fall Classic and won the consolation draw the ITA Southern Regional, while Blazer sophomore Elaine Simon picked up a the championship win in her singles flight at the Samford Fall Invite.
Last season, UAB finished with a 12-8 mark overall -- its best record since 2007. The Blazers return five players from that team and add four freshmen in 2014. The four freshman made up a recruiting class that was ranked as high as No. 12 among mid-major schools in the tennisrecruiting.net rankings.
On Sunday, the Blazers face a talented Florida State team that returns five upperclassmen to this year's squad. Seniors Laurence Porry and Kristina Schleich, along with juniors Daneika Borthwick, Kerrie Cartwright and Mia Vriens led the Seminoles to the 2013 ACC Championship match for the third time in program history last season.
