TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – With three victories in singles and another in doubles, the UAB women’s tennis team concluded the first day of play Friday at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships, which are being held at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium.

“We had the opportunity to play some great competition today and we had a tough day in terms of results,” head coach Lisa Jackson said. “I am looking forward to seeing us continue to fight hard tomorrow and put some of the tough losses behind us.”

Two of UAB’s three doubles teams competed in the main draw, but fell in their respective matches. Junior Caroline Faught and freshman Amy Lowther dropped an 8-6 decision to seeded Lyubove Dorafeeva and Karoline Grymel of Troy. Sophomore Rachel Daniell and senior Menanteau Moolman fell, 9-7, to Northwestern State’s Polina Konop and Daniela Simonova, while senior Isabel Fernandez and freshman Elaine Simon collected a 9-8(2) victory against Troy’s Brooke Durden and Anja Cosovic. Faught and Lowther and Daniell and Moolman are competing in the main draw.

In singles, Simon was the lone Blazer to win in the first round, taking a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ole Miss’ Allie Robbins. Simon followed that up with a 6-2, 7-5 loss to Samford’s AnnMarie Lyon. Lowther was downed 6-0, 6-0 by No. 3 seed Klara Vyskocilova of Tulane in her first match before falling 6-3, 6-0 to Louisiana-Monroe’s Silvia Tumova in the second round. Daniell battled with No. 5 seed Julia Jones of Ole Miss before falling, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, in the first round, but bounced back with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Mississippi State’s Sarai Flores in round two.

Auburn’s Pleun Burgmans, who was also seeded, handed Fernandez a 6-1, 6-1 loss, who had a bye in the second round in the consolation bracket. Faught lost 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-1 to Troy’s Cosovic and Auburn’s Ashley Kitchen, respectively, while Moolman fell 6-1, 6-2 to Tulane’s Emma Helisten before beating Jackson State’s Laura Rojas by a score of 6-0, 6-1.
