JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Giorgia Romeo picked up two wins Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the B singles flight as the UAB women's tennis team continued competition at the UNF Hampton Inn 9A & Baymeadows Fall Tennis Invitational.
Romeo took the court Saturday morning already up a set in a match that was stopped Friday by rain. The third-seeded Romeo quickly finished that match off with a 6-2, 6-0 win over UCF's Allison Hodges and then pulled out a victory over Leonie Guijt of Troy, 10-4, in a match tiebreaker to earn her semifinal spot. She will play Indiana's Lindsey Stuckey on Sunday.
"Giorgia was very impressive today," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "She really picked up where she left off yesterday in her first match, and then I was proud of the mental toughness she showed in the quarterfinals by winning the match tiebreaker after losing the second set."
In addition to Romeo, UAB has three other players still alive in various singles flights. Paula Alvarez, Jenny Cape and Richole Berger will all be in action Sunday.
The last Blazer doubles team alive, the duo of Berger and Cape, saw its run come to an end in the quarterfinals of the B doubles flight. After picking up two wins yesterday, the tandem lost to Jenna Doerfler and Alexis Rodriguez of UCF, 9-7, on Saturday.
The UNF Fall Invitational wraps up on Sunday. Complete results are available each day through the women's tennis home page at unfospreys.com, the official site of North Florida athletics.
