Women's Tennis Finishes At Roberta Alison Fall Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Senior Isabel Fernandez won the No. 4 singles consolation final, and the UAB women’s tennis team wrapped up competition at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic, hosted by The University of Alabama, on Saturday.

Fernandez defeated Jessica Stiles of Kentucky, 6-3, 6-0, to claim the fourth flight’s consolation final. After entering the weekend 1-4 in singles play, the senior finished with a  record of 2-1 on the weekend.

“We had some great individual efforts but still have a lot of work to do as a team in order to get to the level we a capable of playing,” head coach Lisa Jackson said.

Also claiming victories on Saturday were freshman Amy Lowther and senior Rachel Cohen. Lowther beat Liem van Geel of Mississippi State, 7-5, 7-6(8), while Cohen took down Adri Lochner of Samford, 6-3, 6-1.

Sophomore Rachel Daniell dropped a tight contest to Alicia Barnett of Northwestern by  a score of 7-5, 7-6, followed by junior Caroline Faught falling to Lauren Caballero of Samford, 6-0, 7-6(5). Freshman Elaine Simon fell to Maryna Kozachenko of Georgia State, 6-2, 6-1, and senior Menanteau Moolman lost to Georgia State’s Natallia Vavulina, 6-0, 6-0.

All three of UAB’s doubles teams dropped their respective matches in the second round. Daniel and Moolman fell, 8-5, to Georgia State’s Masa Grgan and Jocelyn Ffriend. Faught and Lowther dropped an 8-3 decision to Yui Lynn Miao and Romy Koelzer of Clemson, while Simon and Fernandez lost to the duo of Alabama’s Maya Jansen and Auburn’s Plamena Kurteva, 8-4.



In the final round of doubles, the Blazers grabbed two wins, including Faught and Lowther’s extra-points 9-7 victory over Northwestern’s Anna Livadaru and Veronica Corning. Simon and Fernandez also won their final match by a score of 8-4 over Samford’s Jessica Northcutt and Adri Lochner. Daniel and Moolman, who went 2-1 last week, lost their third match of the weekend, falling in a 8-5 match to Kentucky’s Khristina Blajkevitch and Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff.

The Blazers will have a week off before returning to Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Oct. 19-22 for the ITA Southern Regionals, marking the final fall tournament for the Green and Gold.
