TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - With two doubles victories, and four in singles, the UAB women's tennis team concluded day one of the two-day Roberta Alison Fall Classic at The University of Alabama Tennis Stadium. The group played one doubles round, and two rounds of singles on Friday.
Two of the three UAB doubles teams were playing together for the first time, with both new duos claiming their debut matches. Freshman Elaine Simon and senior Isabel Fernandez knocked off Kentucky's Stephanie Fox and Grace Trimble by a score of 8-2, while junior Caroline Faught and freshman Amy Lowther narrowly escaped Auburn's Maria Cardenas and Ashley Kitchen, 8-6. Sophomore Rachel Daniell and senior Menanteau Moolman, after going 2-1 last weekend, dropped an 8-4 decision to Northwestern's Belinda Niu and Alicia Barnett.
"We are continuing to compete better and more consistently as the fall progresses," head coach Lisa Jackson said. "I was happy with the effort and attitude we brought into today, and I expect the same tomorrow for us."
In the first round of singles, Moolman picked up the lone victory for the Blazers, handling Kentucky's Grace Trimble, 6-1, 6-0, to snap a five-match losing streak. Daniell, the team's leader in singles victories this season with four, took her first set 6-2 before dropping the next two 6-2, 6-2 in falling to Ole Miss' Marija Milutinovic. Fernandez battled against Amy Shu of Michigan, but fell in the match 7-6(2), 6-4.
Also dropping matches in round one of singles play for UAB were Faught, Lowther and Cohen. Faught fell 6-1, 6-3 to Mississippi State's Naomi Tran, while Lowther lost to Kentucky's Fox, 6-2, 6-2. Middle Tennessee's Nayara Moraes, with a score of 7-5, 6-0, dropped Cohen.
Daniell defeated Georgiana Patrasc of Mississippi State, 6-3, 6-1, in round two of singles, while Fernandez picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ole Miss' Iris Verboven - both move on to the consolation finals in No. 2 and No. 4 singles draws, respectively. After getting a bye in the first round, Simon advanced to the No. 9 singles flight championship by taking a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Sarah Gail Niebur of Samford, snapping a four-match losing streak.
