CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The UAB women’s team wrapped up action at the Steve Baras Fall Classic at the Champions Club on Sunday, with sophomore Rachel Daniell highlighting the day as she cruised to the singles championship title.
Overall, the Blazers won five matches Sunday. Three of the wins bring home consolation finals victories, with two in doubles, in addition to Daniell’s championship win.
“I’m happy with the effort this weekend,” head coach Lisa Jackson said. “We’ll now shift our focus to getting back on the courts next weekend in Tuscaloosa and look to continue the momentum we gained this weekend.”
Daniell, who finished the weekend with five total wins and just one loss in doubles, dominated Samford’s Jessica Northcutt en route to a 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles flight championship. Freshman Amy Lowther won her consolation final by defeating Lipscomb’s Jenny Borck, 6-4, 6-4.
Senior Rachel Cohen picked up her first win of the fall with a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (5) victory over Kennesaw State’s Blaire Lasure.
Junior Caroline Faught fell 6-4, 7-5 in her championship final to Samford’s Lauren Caballero. Senior Isabel Fernandez and freshman Elaine Simon reached the consolation finals before falling by scores of 6-3, 6-3 to Samford’s Kristin Lewis and 6-2, 6-3 to Chattanooga’s Jovana Pecovski, respectively. Senior Menanteau Moolman fell 6-3, 6-0 to Samford’s AnnMarie Lyon to round out singles action for UAB.
Up next, the Blazers will head to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Roberta Alison Fall Classic on Oct. 5-7.
