CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Turning in its best performance of the season, the UAB women’s team completed day two Saturday at the Steve Baras Fall Classic at the Champions Club. The Blazers won eight of their 10 matches, and will have three in championships and five in consolation finals on Sunday.
“From a purely results standpoint, it was a great day,” head coach Lisa Jackson said. “We still have a lot of work to do to improve our competitiveness in regard to being consistent throughout our matches. It’s a good day though and we hope to carry this momentum over to tomorrow.”
Sophomore Rachel Daniell and junior Caroline Faught will be the two UAB representatives in Sunday’s singles championships in their respective flights. Daniell handed Alexa Flynn of Chattanooga a 6-1, 6-0 loss to advance, while Faught battled to a 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-2 victory over Lipscomb’s Deahna Welcher.
Advancing to the consolation finals after losing yesterday, senior Isabel Fernandez beat Lucie Payrat of Mercer, 6-3, 6-2. Also advancing were Amy Lowther and Elaine Simon who took down Samford’s Adri Lochner and Kennesaw State’s Isabela Castro by scores of 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1, respectively.
