CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The UAB women’s team opened play Friday at the Steve Baras Fall Classic at the Champions Club by winning four matches. The Blazers collected three wins in singles and one in doubles.

After the four victories, and with Rachel Cohen getting a bye in singles, UAB will have five in Saturday’s semifinals in the Blazers’ respective flights.

“The effort was good today and I’m really looking forward to building on that tomorrow,” head coach Lisa Jackson said.

Senior Menanteau Moolman put together the most impressive victory for UAB on Friday, blanking Lee’s Annie Sandberg, 6-0, 6-0.

“[Moolman] had a tough tournament two weeks ago but bounced back nicely today and had an impressive win today,” Jackson recalled. “To go out and beat a college player 6-0, 6-0 is a difficult thing to do. I’m really happy how she turned the last two weeks of practice into a strong victory today.”

Also moving forward in singles draw play were sophomore Rachel Daniell who knocked off Tarah Garner of Lee, 6-4, 6-3, and junior Caroline Faught after beating Kennesaw State’s Therese Lagerkvist, 6-2, 6-1.

Senior Isabel Fernandez was edged 6-4, 6-4 by Chattanooga’s Jenna Nurik to fall to the loser’s bracket with teammate freshman Elaine Simon who fell to Samford’s AnnMarie Lyon, 6-2, 7-5. Katie Polk of Chattanooga sent freshman Amy Lowther to the loser’s draw as well with a 6-2, 7-5 victory.

In doubles, Lowther and Simon teamed up to pick up their first doubles victory in the duo’s debut by dominating Jacksonville State’s Danielle Kerindi and Isidora Knezevic with a score of 8-1. Fernandez and Faught fell 8-2 to Chattanooga’s Nurik and Kaylene Chadwell, while Daniell and Moolman lost 8-4 to Kennesaw State’s Jana Hueckinghaus and Tamara Plocher.

Matches resume on Saturday morning with the semifinal rounds of singles and doubles.
