NORFOLK, Va. -- UAB freshman Paula Castro battled through a second-set tiebreaker to lift the 12th-seeded UAB women's tennis team to a 4-2 win against No. 13 seed UTEP in the first round of the 2014 Conference USA Championship on Wednesday.

Wednesday's victory marks UAB's first win in the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship since 2005, when the Blazers downed Louisville, 4-1, in a consolation match.

The Blazers now advance to the second round to face No. 5 seed Louisiana Tech on Thursday at 2 p.m. ET. The winner of the UAB vs. LA Tech matchup will play No. 4 seed Marshall on Friday.

UAB started off Wednesday's contest by falling in an early 2-0 hole after Amy Lowther fell at the No. 2 position and Elaine Simon dropped a match at the fourth singles court.

Down 2-0, Blazer freshman Pardis Kianoush jumpstarted a UAB rally by taking down UTEP's Marie LeBlond, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 3 court. Teammate Rachel Daniell then followed with a three-set, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, victory over Miner Rebecca Calvillo at the No. 1 singles spot to knot the match up at 2-2.

The Blazers held strong at the bottom two positions, winning in tiebreakers. Catherine Ragon ousted UTEP's Daphne Visscher, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), before Castro delivered the match clincher with a 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) win at the sixth singles spot.
