MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- UAB dropped a close, 4-3 decision on the road Friday at Memphis in Conference USA women's tennis action.
After nearly four hours and 15 minutes, the team match came down to a three-setter at No. 3 singles, where the Tigers' Marjorie Ondeck squeaked out a 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 victory over UAB's Giorgia Romeo to secure the deciding point.
The match at No. 3 was one of two three-setters on the day. UAB's Brittany DeFelice won 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 over Amanda Brown in the other. The Blazers' other singles wins came from Paula Alvarez at No. 1 and Jenny Cape at No. 5. Cape improved her team-best record to 11-4 this spring.
Memphis picked up its other singles wins from Courtney Collins at No. 2 and Kelly Gray at No. 6. The Tigers also won the crucial doubles point thanks to a 9-7 win from Ondeck and Ashley Murdock over UAB's Romeo and Evelien Strijker in the clinching doubles match. It was only the second loss in 10 matches together for the Blazer duo.
With Friday's loss, UAB dropped to 9-8 on the season and 2-3 against Conference USA opponents. Memphis improved to 11-14 and 1-2 against league foes.
The Blazers play again in Memphis on Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe. First serve is set for 10 a.m. CT.
