BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s tennis team battled through the rain at George Ward Park on Friday to pick up a 6-0 win over Southern.
UAB improves to 9-6 overall on the season and snaps a three-match skid, while the Jaguars fall to 5-8 overall this year.
“I am happy with the focus we had after having to wait for the rain to move through,” UAB head coach Lisa Jackson said. “I look forward to seeing them compete at a high level once again on Sunday.”
With the two teams deciding to play singles first, Blazers Isabel Fernandez and Rachel Daniell jump started their team with two quick wins at the top two positions.
Fernandez led off with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Southern’s Demtria Woods at No.1, while Daniell ousted Gabriella Moore, 6-0, 6-0, at the second court.
Up 2-0, it was the bottom two courts that would clinch the match for the Blazers as Menanteau Moolman and Elaine Simon rolled to two quick wins.
At the fifth position, Moolman ran past Laura Syori, 6-0, 6-4, before Simon took a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over the Jaguars’ Cameron Davis.
UAB finished the day with two more wins – one a 7-5, 6-1 victory by Caroline Faught at the third court and the other a 6-3, 3-6, 10-2 Amy Lowther win at the fourth position.
The Blazers continue the current home stand when they host Brenau University on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. CT.
