BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -----  UAB junior women’s tennis player Caroline Faught capped off a strong performance from the Blazers on Sunday with a match-clinching win at the third singles position to lift her team to a 7-0 win over Southern Miss.

UAB moves to 7-3 overall with the victory, while the Golden Eagles fall to 0-7 on the year.

“Coming into today’s game we really had a tough stretch against solid competition,” UAB head coach Lisa Jackson said. “We did a good job of bouncing back and competing today to pick up a conference win.”

Faught ran past her opponent, Elanor Grossman, at the third court picking up a 6-1, 6-3 win to clinch the contest. Faught’s win was one of six straight-set Blazer victories in a match where UAB took wins at each court.

The Green and Gold started the day with a strong showing in doubles play. It was Isabel Fernandez and Elaine Simon (UAB) who began the contest with an 8-0 triumph over USM’s Macie Case and Emily Nettles at the third doubles court.

The Blazers continued to roll following that win as Sarah Witkowski and Faught defeated Kate Lanier and Mackenzie Oskin, 8-2, at the second court , while UAB’s tandem of Menanteau Moolman and Rachel Daniell completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Alexus Coats and Elanor Grossman at the top spot.

That strong performance in doubles carried over onto the six singles positions, where the Blazers’ Simon ousted USM’s Nettles, 6-0, 6-1, at court No. 6.

Simon’s victory was then followed by UAB freshman Amy Lowther’s 6-0, 6-0 win over Case at the fifth spot, before Faught’s match-clinching triumph at the third court.

UAB ended the day with Moolman’s 6-0, 6-4 victory at the fourth position, Daniell’s 6-2, 7-6 win over Lanier at the second court and a 6-3, 6-3 win from Fernandez over Coats at court No. 1.

The Blazers now have a brief break before hosting USC-Upstate at 10 a.m. CT on March 2.
