BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB junior Caroline Faught took a singles win at the fourth position, but it was not enough as the Blazers’ women’s tennis team fell to Chattanooga, 5-1, on Thursday.
With singles play moved ahead of doubles action due to inclement weather, the Mocs used wins at the first, second, third, fifth and sixth courts to stay unbeaten with a 7-0 record on the season. The Blazers fall to 6-2 with the loss.
Faught’s 1-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory over UTC’s Kelsey Coots was only Chattanooga’s second singles defeat this season. The Mocs came into Thursday’ match having won five-straight contests in 7-0 fashion.
“We hit a tough and competitive team today, and all credit goes to them,” UAB head coach Lisa Jackson said. “Now, we have to regroup and get ready for very tough Auburn and Southern Miss teams.”
UAB’s Menanteau Moolman picked up a loss at the third position to begin the contest for the Blazers, falling 6-3, 6-0 to the Mocs’ Kayla Jones.
Senior Isabel Fernandez then took her first loss the season with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat to Chattanooga’s Jenna Nurik at the top position, while Rachel Daniell also notched her first loss of the year when UTC’s Kaylene Chadwell took the contest at the No. 2 court, 7-6, 6-3.
Rounding out UAB’s day, Elaine Simon fell to Katie Polk, 7-5, 6-3, while fellow Blazer freshman Elaine Simon dropped a 6-4, 6-4 match at the sixth spot to Claire Mulyadi.
UAB now travels to No. 59 Auburn on Saturday. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
