BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team earned its first victory of the 2010 season Sunday with a 4-1 win indoors over Charlotte at the Samford Tennis Center.

The Blazers (1-1) managed three-set victories at the top two singles positions. Both Evelien Strijker at No. 1 and Paula Alvarez at No. 2 overcame first-set losses as the pair combined to lose just nine games over the final two sets of their matches.

"We made some good, strategic adjustments in those matches to pull out the second and third sets," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "We're excited to get our first win under our belt. I wouldn't say we played our best today, but I'm very proud of the way we fought."

Giorgia Romeo at No. 3 singles and Brittany DeFelice at No. 5 each won in straight sets for UAB. Romeo, who also won her match in the season-opener against Alabama, improved to her record to 2-0 with her 6-4, 6-4 win over Andrea Rivera of Charlotte (0-3).

The only blemish Sunday for UAB came at No. 4 singles, where Menanteau Moolman suffered a straight-set loss to Charlotte's Kimber Redfern.

The No. 6 singles match was not completed and doubles matches were not played because of Charlotte's travel plans. UAB's Jenny Cape led 6-3, 4-1 in the final singles contest before it was halted when the team match was decided.

UAB returns to the court in two weeks when the Blazers host Kennesaw State Feb. 12 at Lakeshore Tennis Center and Arkansas State Feb. 13 at Brook Highland Racquet Club.
