Blazer Women's Tennis Completes Day One Of Samford Invite

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- On an otherwise challenging opening day for the UAB women's tennis team at the Samford Winter Invitational, senior Evelien Strijker pulled through for a three-set singles win Friday.

Strijker dropped the first set but came from behind for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Samford's Andrie Meiring. UAB's Giorgia Romeo and Paula Alvarez also went three sets but came up short in their first matches of 2011.

Despite at least one tight set in the remaining matches, the other four Blazers who played Friday dropped straight-set decisions.

UAB players matched up with Samford players in Friday's singles action with this weekend's tournament following a "hidden dual" format with no team scoring.

The Blazers will be back in action Saturday with two more rounds of singles play. UAB players will square off with Georgia State players on Saturday morining and Mercer players in the afternoon. All matches are played at the Samford Tennis Center.
