BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Juniors Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas are set to compete in the 2014 AVCA Sand Volleyball Pairs Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala. The tournament will run from Friday, May 2 through Sunday, May 4.
Playing in Pool A, the Blazer pair is slated to begin at 11 a.m. CT as the No. 5 seed. They will play two matches on Friday, then two more on Saturday. The top two teams from each pool (A&B) will advance to the championship bracket on Sunday.
This is the third-straight season that UAB, who is in its third year as a program, has sent a pair to the AVCA championships. Last season, Hirini and Thomas were selected for the event.
In the 2013 tournament, the duo picked up the first win for UAB at the AVCA National Pairs Championships. As the No. 4 seed, they defeated the No. 1 seed in their respective pool.
Hirini and Thomas have collected 12 wins on the season to lead the Blazers. The duo won the Upper Division pairs bracket at the Tulane Pelican Classic earlier this season. They finished 4-0 on the final day to earn the win.
UAB finished the 2014 season with a 5-9 record overall, losing six of those dual matches, 3-2. Most recently, the team defeated No. 10 Georgia State, but fell to Tulane to conclude the dual match season.
