BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB sand volleyball players Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas were selected to participate in the 2014 AVCA Nationals Pairs Competition for the second consecutive year.

The selection makes it the third-straight for UAB, who is in its third season as a program. The Blazers’ duo will begin play on Friday as one of 10 pairs across the country to reach the pairs competition.

Hirini and Thomas, who picked up 10 wins so far in 2104, are in Pool A with Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Bojana Tordorovic (Long Beach State), Zuzana Markova and Marcela Araya (Louisiana-Monroe), Taylor Nyquist and Sammie Strausbaugh (Jacksonville) and Betsi Metter and Litara Keil (Loyola Marymount).

Action will begin on Friday, May 2 and run through Sunday, May 4. Pool play will be Friday and Saturday with each pairing playing four matches. The top two pairs from each pool (A & B) will advance to the Championship Bracket on Sunday.

Last season, the duo earned a win over the No. 1 seed in their pool, but did not advance past the pool play.
