April 19, 2017

MACON, Ga. - Sophomore Emily Martinez has been named to the CCSA Beach Volleyball All-Academic Team, as announced by league officials on Wednesday.

Martinez, who boasts a 3.92 GPA as an accounting major, led the team in wins this season with a 16-10 regular season record.

“Emily is the ultimate student-athlete who maximizes her ability in everything she does,” head coach Ashley Hardee said. “Emily gives it all she’s got every time she steps onto the court and that translates to the classroom as well. She is truly deserving of this award and she’s a fantastic representative of UAB.”

Not only is the San Antonio native a member of the 10-person CCSA All-Academic Team, but she was also recognized on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and earned the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal as a member of the indoor volleyball team. Martinez has been a member of the UAB Dean’s List and has been on the Honor Roll every semester at UAB.

On the court, Martinez tallied a team-best record of 16-10 which included winning 11 of her final 13 matches. She has been a fixture in the Blazers’ lineup the entire season and has solidified her position on court three over the last month.

Martinez has most recently paired with freshman Kenley Adams and the duo is 12-5 together. Included in that was a signature win over No. 9 Georgia State which sparked a six-match winning streak.

Martinez and the Blazers head the CCSA Tournament this weekend where they will participate in Pool B. UAB is set to face No. 7 LSU, No. 9 Georgia State, No. 15 FAU and College of Charleston in the round-robin pool play.
