Sand Volleyball Opens 2014 Season Versus Mercer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB sand volleyball team will open the 2014 season by hosting the Mercer Bears on Saturday, March 8 at 1 p.m. CT at the UAB Sand Courts. The Blazers will begin their third season as a program.

This will be the first of three meetings between UAB and Mercer. Last season, the Blazers opened with a 5-0 win over the Bears. They won all three meetings between the two teams in the 2013 season.

UAB returns its top duo from 2013 in juniors Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas. As a pair, they finished with a 10-9 record that included a win in the AVCA Nationals over the No. 1 pair from Georgia State. 

Also returning are graduate students Sam Serley and Allison Woods along with seniors Rachel Fairbanks, Becca Howard and Ally Slaughter and sophomores Lindsay Simmons and Emma Schroer.

The newcomers include freshmen Gabby Deshotel, Mandy Glon, Hannah Kowal and Amber Treace.

Tickets for the match will be available at the gate of the UAB Sand Volleyball Courts. It will be $5 for adults and $3 for children.
