BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB’s sand volleyball team announced its 2014 schedule on Thursday. The Blazers are set to begin their third season in program history in March.
"We are looking forward to our 2014 sand season and are anxious to get started with our training,” said head sand volleyball coach Bailey Coleman. “Each one of us coaches and players alike know that being a part of the UAB sand volleyball program is a privilege.”
The team will open with a home match against Mercer on Saturday, March 8 at the UAB Sand Courts.
UAB will then hit the road for the better part of a month. First up will be the South Carolina Tournament in Columbia, S.C. from March 22-23. The team will then travel to Louisiana for three days to take on Louisiana-Monroe (April 3) and Tulane (April 4 and 5).
In the second tournament, UAB will compete in the Fiesta on Siesta Key Tournament Friday, April 11 through Sunday, April 13. The final road match will come on Saturday, April 19 when UAB takes on LSU.
The Blazers close out the regular-season with two matches at home. Coach Coleman and her team will take on Tulane and Georgia State on Saturday, April 26. Then they return Sunday, April 27 to face Tulane and Louisiana-Monroe. Play will begin at 11 a.m. CT on both days.
“Our hearts are still heavy with the loss of Coach Hal Messersmith, but we all know that we will play and coach with the values and competitive spirit he instilled in us every day,” remarked Coleman. “Our goal is to earn our way to the AVCA Sand Volleyball National Championships as a team in May. If we accomplished that goal we would have honored Coach Hal in the best way possible."
