Sand volleyball returns for its second season at UAB.
Jan. 3, 2013
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The second season of UAB sand volleyball is just over two months away as the squad released its 2013 schedule on Thursday.
First serve for this year's slate will take place in a home match against Tulane on March 9 at 10 a.m. CT - the first of five home contests on the season. The Blazers have a doubleheader on that day with a match against Mercer to follow at 2 p.m. CT.
"I am really looking forward to the season ahead," UAB head coach Hal Messersmith said. "We had great support from our fans last year, and I know we will have the same as we move forward."
Following the season-opening home slate, UAB hits the road for the rest of March, playing in tournaments at Tulane, College of Charleston and Jacksonville throughout the month.
Coach Messersmith and his team then return home for three-straight against ULM (April 4) and North Florida (April 6 and 7) before hitting the road on April 13-14 to participate in the Siesta Keys Tournament and the Florida State Tournament on April 20-21.
"We definitely have a better grasp of the sport going into our second year," added Messersmith. "They now select three teams from each region into nationals, so we decided to play as many teams from the Southeast Region as possible to hopefully give us a chance to be one of those three squads."
The Blazers conclude the 2013 schedule at the AVCA Nationals, which takes place on April 26-27 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
