Hirini, Thomas Pick Up Win At AVCA Nationals

Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas concluded play at the AVCA Pairs Championship.

GULF SHORES, Ala. - Juniors Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas split two matches to close out play at the 2014 AVCA Sand Volleyball Pairs Championship on Saturday.

The Blazer duo picked up a win over Long Beach State's Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Bojana Tordorovic, 21-14, 21-15, to open the day. The pair suffered a defeat in the final match against Betsi Metter and Litara Keil of Loyola Marymount to finish 1-3 on the weekend.

UAB's win in the first match on Saturday was the second all-time for Hirini and Thomas at the AVCA Pairs Championship. They also picked up a win in the tournament last season.

With the conclusion of pool play, the Blazer tandem dropped its bid to participate in the 16-team single elimination tournament on Sunday.

UAB finished the 2014 season with a 5-9 record overall, losing six of those dual matches, 3-2. Most recently, the team defeated No. 10 Georgia State, but fell to Tulane to conclude the dual match season.
