GULF SHORES, Ala. – The UAB sand volleyball pair of Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas fell in two matches on the first day of the 2014 AVCA Sand Volleyball Pairs Championships.

The Blazers fell to Louisiana-Monroe’s Zuzana Markova and Marcela Araya, 21-17, 21-11, before losing a tough three-set match to Jacksonville’s Taylor Nyquist and Sammie Strausbaugh, 19-21, 21-16, 15-10.

In the first match, Hirini recorded 17 kills and added 10 digs to lead UAB against the Warhawk duo. The Blazers were off to a strong start in the second match of the day, taking the first set to lead 1-0. However, Jacksonville would power back to win the next two sets and take the win.

UAB totaled 31 kills in that match, with Hirini tallying 18 and Thomas 13. Hirini also added three blocks and three aces in the match.

The pair will return to action tomorrow for two more matches and a chance to advance to the pairs championship bracket on Sunday. Action begins at 11 a.m. CT.
