BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB sand volleyball team defeated No. 10 Georgia State on Saturday afternoon at the UAB Sand Courts.

“I am really proud of the team, how they have developed from the beginning of the season to now,” said head coach Bailey Coleman. “You can see they have really bought into the program, the system that we have here and how the Blazers can be successful. Their work ethic and strategy, it was just a different team out here. To beat a No. 10 team, we knew it was going to be a battle all day.”

UAB (5-8) earned wins at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 positions to take the, 3-2, win over Georgia State. The Blazers also recorded a victory at the No. 6 position in an exhibition match.

Georgia State opened with an early lead after Sarah Agnew and Delaney Rohan defeated Becca Howard and Gabby Deshotel, 21-14, 21-13, at the No. 4 spot.

The Blazers responded with two-straight wins to take a 2-1 lead after the first round of matches. Rachel Fairbanks and Sara Rishell topped GSU’s Milani Pickering and Natalie Wilson, 21-16, 18-21, 15-9 at the No. 3 position.

Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas pushed UAB in front of the Panthers in another three-set match. The pair defeated Sara Olivova and Jansen Button, 21-19, 16-21, 15-12 at the No. 1 court.

No. 5 pair Amber Treace and Ally Slaughter secured the victory for the Blazers with a 22-20, 21-14 win over Karlee Kavanaugh and Alexis Elmurr of Georgia State.

“Georgia State is always good and I think playing on our home court made a difference for us, remarked Coleman. The girls just kept a steady head and I think their work ethic really paid off today.”

Emma Schroer and Lindsay Simmons defeated Kaitlynn Hufstetler and Jessica Fourspring in a close match that took extra points in both sets. The Blazers were able to take the win, 23-21, 23-21 in exhibition.

UAB will be back in action tomorrow with two matches. The Blazers will play Tulane at 11:30 a.m. followed by a match with Louisiana-Monroe at 1:30 p.m.
