BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With the contest tied 2-2, North Florida’s top duo of Dagnija Medina and Anna Budinska pulled out a three-set win to lift the Ospreys over the UAB sand volleyball team on Sunday.

The Blazers conclude the 2013 home schedule with the loss and move to 10-6 overall on the season. Meanwhile, North Florida improves to 11-2 overall.

In what was a back-and-forth contest all afternoon, UAB took the first point with a 17-21, 22-20, 15-9 triumph from the No. 5 tandem of Becca Howard and Sam Skinner over UNF’s Nicole Baran and Britt Claessons.

North Florida then evened the score with the Blazers as Cameron McGuire and Paige Pridgeon defeated Blazers’ Rachel Fairbanks and Sara Rishell, 21-6, 21-15, at the fourth flight.

With the dual tied at 1-1, the two teams then split the next two courts when the UAB duo of  Kirsten Gallagher and Ally Slaughter defeated Carolyn Jenkins and Anna Wagner, 21-15, 21-17, at the second position. At the No. 3 court, the Blazers’ tandem of Sam Serley and Alison Woods fell in a tight 21-17, 13-21, 15-4 match.

With the score tied at 2-2, all eyes turned to the No. 1 court where each team’s top duos battled it out to decide the contest. Following a 21-19 win in the first set, UAB’s team of Bethanie Thomas and Kiriana Hirini looked poised to give their team the win.

It was not to be, however, as North Florida’s Medina and Budinska stormed back for a 21-8 second-set win and a 15-12 triumph in the third set.

The Blazers now head to the Florida State on April 20-21 before traveling to the AVCA Nationals on May 3-5.
