Sand Volleyball Sweeps Oregon On Day Two

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The UAB sand volleyball team split its final two games on Sunday afternoon at the Gamecock Invitational. The Blazers earned a win over Oregon but fell to College of Charleston to finish 2-2 on the weekend.

UAB (2-5) lost another close match after falling to College of Charleston (3-0), 3-2, in its first match. The Blazers then rebounded to earn a 5-0 win over Oregon (1-4) to close out the weekend competition.

Against College of Charleston, UAB opened with a win at the No. 1 position by Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas. The pair topped Emily Neideffer and Darcy Dorton in three sets. Hirini and Thomas won the first set 21-14 but dropped the second set 19-21 to force a tiebreaking third set. The Blazer duo edged the Cougars 15-13 to take a 1-0 lead.

Another three set match came at the No. 2 position, where UAB's Sam Serley and Alison Woods eventually fell to Cara Howley and Melissa Morello, 21-18, 12-21, 15-6. Then Amber Treace and Ally Slaughter lost to Andi Zbojniewicz and Sloane White, 21-15, 21-16, to give College of Charleston a 2-1 lead.

Sara Rishell and Rachel Fairbanks tied the match up with a win at the No. 4 position. The Blazers' pair earned a 21-18, 21-18 win over Casey Warren and Kari Fidelholtz for the Cougars.

The tiebreaker came down to the No. 5 position, where College of Charleston's pair of Kallie McKown and Maddie Hills took the win over UAB's Becca Howard and Gabby Deshotel, 21-11, 21-19, to secure the match.

 

 

UAB rebounded with a big win in its final match of the weekend. The Blazers defeated Oregon 5-0. Hirini and Thomas improved to 4-0 on the weekend with a 21-16, 21-10 win at the No. 1 position. Woods and Serley dropped the first set, but battle back to win, 20-22, 21-13, 15-10, at the No. 2 position.

Also improving to 4-0 this weekend, Rishell and Fairbanks took the win, 21-10, 21-17 at the No. 3 position. Slaughter and Treace earned a 23-21, 21-13 win at the No. 4 position and Howard and Deshotel completed the sweep with a 21-13, 21-7 win at the No. 5 position.
