MACON, Ga. -- The UAB sand volleyball team posted its second straight victory Wednesday with a 3-2 win on the road at Mercer.
The Blazers lost the top two positions but won each of the bottom three as they improved their record to 2-1. Wednesday's match was the first for Mercer, which is now 0-1.
"We weren't as sharp as we needed to be today, but we were still able to pull out a win," UAB coach Hal Messersmith said. "We're still learning to play the outdoor game where a few errors can really hurt you.
"In the indoor game, you can get away with a few errors because there are plenty of points and plenty of plays to get things straightened out, but just a few errors on the sand can get you in trouble. Today was a good learning experience for us, and it's nice to be able to learn while winning."
UAB's Becca Howard and Michele Simmons pulled out a crucial match in three sets at the No. 5 position to help the Blazers to the win. The duo overcame a first-set defeat for a 19-21, 21-15, 15-10 win over Mercer's Charlayna Braxton and Lizzie Knapper.
The other two wins for UAB came in two sets. Rachel Fairbanks and Kiriana Hirini were 21-10, 21-18 winners over Caroline Carlton and Emily Rochefort at No. 3, while Kate Morrell and Ally Slaughter won a close, 21-19, 21-17 decision over Zoe Becton and Madeline Dolny at No. 4.
UAB will now remain on the road to play this weekend in the College of Charleston Sand Classic. The action gets underway Friday and runs through Sunday in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
