Blazers Suffer 5-0 Loss To No. 9 FIU

Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas forced the only three-set match on the day.

ATLANTA, Ga. The UAB sand volleyball team fell to No. 9 FIU, 5-0, on Monday evening. The Blazers are now 0-2 on the season.

UAB’s top pair of Kiriana Hirini and Bethanie Thomas played FIU’s Ksenia Sukhereva and Maja Rosko. The Blazers dropped the first set 21-17, but bounced back to win the second set, 21-18 to force the tiebreaking third set. FIU edged UAB’s pair 15-9 to take the win.

At the No. 2 position, Sara Rishell and Rachel Fairbanks fell to Tina Toghiyani and Aren Cupp in straight sets. The Panthers took the win, 22-20, 21-14.

Sam Serley and Alison Woods took on Kristine Monforte and Martyna Gluchowicz at the No. 3 position. The Blazer duo fell to the Panthers, 21-8, in the first set and forced them to extra points in the second set but eventually fell, 23-21.

FlU’s Jessica Mendoza and Jessica Gehrke topped UAB’s Lindsay Simmons and Becca Howard, 21-6, 21-10, at the No. 4 position. Then, Ally Slaughter and Amber Treace fell to Maryna Samoday and Camila Rosado, 21-12, 21-11 took secure the sweep for FIU.



The Blazers will remain on the road in dual action to take on Mercer on Friday, March 14. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. CT.
