BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- With the contest tied 2-2, UAB’s Kirsten Gallagher and Rachel Fairbanks put up a valiant effort but fell short in a 21-19 third set loss as the Blazer sand volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Tulane on Sunday.
After splitting the first four courts, all eyes went to the third position where the No. 2 pairs were locked in a back-and-forth match. Facing the Green Wave’s Jackie Wegner and Anna Wruck, Gallagher and Fairbanks picked up a first-set win, 21-11, before falling, 21-15, in the second.
The Blazer duo then fell behind 10-7 in the third before battling back to tie it at 10-10. After fighting off several decisive points, Tulane was able to pick up the victory and clinch the 3-2 win.
With the loss, UAB falls to 1-1 on the season, while Tulane improves to 2-0 to begin the year.
UAB now travels to Monroe, La., to take on ULM on Thursday at 2 p.m. CT.
