BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball program and head coach Marla Townsend announced the signing of Becky Fox and Megan Smith on Thursday.

Fox and Smith become the fourth and fifth members of the 2014-15 signing class to ink with the Blazers, and will join UAB next fall in preparation for the 2015 softball season. The duo has combined for nearly 200 wins in the circle, and both add value in the batters box with offensive capabilities as well.

See below for details on Fox and Smith, as well as comments from head coach Marla Townsend.

Becky Fox – P – Pelham, Ala. (Pelham HS)
Fox comes to UAB from nearby Pelham High School in Pelham, Ala. She was named Most Valuable Player at the AHSAA 2013 Class 6A State Tournament for her efforts in helping lead Pelham to a runner-up finish in the Class 6A Championship. She was also named to the Birmingham News All-Metro Team as a junior, and was a two-time selection to the All-Shelby County Team (2010, 2012).

She has amassed a 65-12 record as a pitcher thus far in her high school career with a 1.26 ERA with eight no-hitters, and a .344 batting average. Off the field Fox is a successful student in the classroom with a 3.74 GPA.

During her time in travel ball she has recorded a 71-10 win/loss record with a 1.47 total ERA. She has tossed seven no-hitters and batted at a clip of .397. She was named the Max Preps Player of the Week on April 14, 2012, and helped her team to a second place finish at the 2012 ASA Nationals, and a third place result at the 2009 USFA World Series.

“Becky is an extremely smart kid that wins games and spins the ball well,” Townsend said. “She throws all of her pitches for strikes and is always in the strike zone.   She is another great kid that will fit well into our family atmosphere and be successful.  Becky has played on high level teams in school ball and travel and just finds a way to win games consistently.”

Megan Smith – P/OF – Pisgah, Ala. (Pisgah HS)
Smith comes to UAB from Pisgah HS in Pisgah, Ala. She has picked up all-state honors three times, and was named the 2013 Class 3A State Tournament MVP. She has amassed a 42-6 record and had a 29-game win streak during her career.

She has given up one run in 70 innings of postseason work, and owns a 128-31 career record. She has helped Pisgah to the Class 2A state championship two times, and has been named to the all-state tournament team four times.

She owns a .486 batting average, and holds the state record with just one strikeout in 186 at-bats.

“Megan Smith can come in and compete right away in the field and in the circle,” Townsend said. “She has electric stuff on the mound and throws a lot of pitches for strikes.  She comes from a winning tradition of two state championships where she led her team in the circle and at the plate.  At the plate she grinds out at bats, doesn’t strike out, and has power potential.”
