BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball program and head coach Marla Townsend announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. Rachel Dunsford, Madison Millsaps, and Katlyn Sides inked with the Blazers and become the first three members of the 2014-15 UAB signing class.
The three high school seniors have combined for eight all-state selections, and are capable of playing numerous positions. Of the three selections, two are from Alabama (Millsaps/Sides), and one hails from Florida (Dunsford).
See below for details on each of the commits, as well as comments from head coach Marla Townsend on each individual signee.
Madison Millsaps – C/1B/OF – Centre, Ala. (Cherokee County HS)
Millsaps comes to UAB from Cherokee County High School in Centre, Ala. She was named to the AHSAA North-South Team, was a three-time ASWA 4A All-State First Team Catcher, was a five-time All-Area Team selection, and four-time selection to the All-Gadsden Times team.

As a sophomore she batted at a clip of .544 with 69 hits, 36 RBI, 23 doubles and seven home runs.
She is a member of the Southern Force softball team, and is also a member of the volleyball team.
“Madison is a tall, athletic, two-sport athlete that will hit at a high level in college,” Townsend said. “She is a left-handed hitter with gap-to-gap pop and major power potential. She can play multiple positions and catch if we need her. Madison will be a great asset to our team because we believe she will be a great teammate and leader that many people love being around.”
Rachel Dunsford – INF – Cantonment, Fla. (Tate HS)
Dunsford comes to UAB from Tate High School in Cantonment, Fla. She was named first-team all-area by the Pensacola News Journal, and was also selected to the 2013 Miracle Sports All-State First Team.
During her junior campaign Dunsford picked up first-team all-area honors from the Pensacola News Journal, and a selection to the 2012 Miracle All-State Second Team. She batted at a clip of .432 with 16 RBI, 8 doubles and two home runs during her junior season. As a sophomore she totaled a .463 average, 28 RBI, 11 doubles, two home runs, and helped lead her team to the District and Quarterfinal Championship. Dunsford is also successful off the field with a 3.99 GPA.
She has played for High Intensity, Wichita Mustangs and the West Florida Elite travel ball teams, and also participated in volleyball and weightlifting at Tate HS. She was named to the Tate HS Hall of Fame, and played at the ASA Nationals, Gold Nationals and Premier Fastpitch Nationals as a member of the West Florida Elite.
“Rachel is a high character kid that comes from a great family,” Townsend said. “Rachel is a special hitter with gap power and has the potential to come in and compete right away. She can play multiple positions and is a great athlete that will make our team better.”
Katlyn Sides – UTL – Sumiton, Ala. (Sumiton Christian HS)
Sides comes to UAB from Sumiton Christian High School in Sumiton, Ala. She has lettered every year in softball since the seventh grade, and helped Sumiton Christian to a state championship title in 2010. She is a three-time ASWA All-State Selection with honors as a utility player in 2013, second baseman in 2012 and outfielder in 2010.
During her career she has been a contributor to five consecutive state tournament appearances, and a runner-up finish in the 2012 state tournament.
She is the AHSAA record holder in RBI in a season with 89, and hits in a season with 85. She is a member of the Birmingham Vipers and varsity basketball team.
“Katlyn Sides is another extremely bright multisport athlete that can play many positions,” Townsend said. “Katlyn is another competitor at the plate that grinds day in and day out at the plate and outworks people. She holds the hits record and RBI record and we think that she will continue to do the same at the Division I level.”
