BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB softball team recently kicked off fall practice, and the squad has been hard at work incorporating its four newcomers and preparing for another successful season.
The Blazers finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 37-22, and earned their third-straight bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"We are working extremely hard this fall in every aspect of the game," head coach Marla Townsend said. "I am pleased with the endurance level of the team, and we are continuing to work to improve our overall quickness and our first steps."
UAB has hosted three fall games so far this fall, and has a shutout in each. On Sunday, Sept. 21, the squad defeated Wallace St. in both matches of the doubleheader, 2-0, 1-0, respectively.
On Oct. 2, the Blazers topped Miles, 6-0, with pitchers Lannah Campbell and Leigh Streetman combining for a perfect game. In 21 innings played, the pitching staff has given up only two hits. In 2012, Campbell and Webster combined for 271 innings pitched. Campbell also boasted a 1.70 ERA and a record of 15-7 with nine complete games and six shutouts.
Junior Kristen McGrath, who tallied a UAB single-season record 14 home runs last season, has recorded four RBIs, with at least one per game, while senior Kate Armstrong has added two RBIs with a homerun in the game against Miles. Armstrong finished her junior season with 56 starts at third base and a team-high 85 assists.
Freshman Caitlin Attfield, who has been starting the fall games at shortstop, has scored a run in each of the three games in her position as leadoff hitter.
"At this point we are further along than fall seasons in the past as far as team defense goes, which allows us more practice time to dedicate to the important little things," Townsend said. "As we wrap up our fall non-traditional season we hope to have team leaders emerge and players to establish their roles."
The squad will practice on six more dates between now and Oct. 18, all to be determined.
UAB will wrap the fall season on Tuesday, Oct. 9 with a second twin bill against Wallace St., with action starting at 6 p.m. CT at the UAB softball field.
