BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -The UAB softball team has earned its fifth-straight bid to the NCAA Championship, the NCAA announced Sunday night. The Blazers will open play at the Athens, Ga. regional against North Carolina State on Friday, May 16, in the double-elimination format, which concludes on Sunday, May 18.
"We're excited for the opportunity to get back out on the field again with this competitive team," head coach Marla Townsend said. "Knowing how hard they've worked, but also knowing we still haven't played our best ball yet, what a better time for them to come together and showcase their talent."
The Blazers were selected as the No. 3 seed in the Athens regional and will open against the No. 2 seed N.C. State (34-16). Chattanooga (34-19) is the No. 4 seed in the regional, while the host Bulldogs (45-12), recent winners of the SEC Tournament, are the No. 4 overall seed in the NCAA.
UAB's first game of the regional is set for 2:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. CT on Friday, May 16 against the Wolfpack. The winner of that game will advance to the 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT game on Saturday, May 17, to face the winner of Chattanooga/Georgia.
UAB finished the regular season at 31-25 overall after claiming a runner-up finish in the Conference USA regular-season race. The Blazers locked down the No. 2 seed for the C-USA Championship - the third-straight season of claiming a No. 2 seed or better in the league's tournament - and dropped a first round contest to Marshall, who went on to advance to the championship before falling to Tulsa.
The Blazers played the nation's second-toughest non-conference schedule and 10th-toughest overall schedule, resulting in a No. 36 RPI entering Sunday's selection show on ESPNU.
The Green and Gold totaled four wins against teams in the RPI top-35, including an 8-0 shutout over No. 3 (RPI) Georgia. The Blazers are 2-8 all-time against the Bulldogs, including a 1-1 record this season at the 6th Annual Bulldog Invitational back in late February. UAB's first round opponent, the N.C. State Wolfpack, enter the NCAA Regional at 34-16 overall and have squared off with the Blazers once in program history, dropping a 3-1 contest to UAB back on March 17, 2012. Chattanooga, the No. 4 seed, represents the Southern Conference, as UAB owns a 13-9 overall record against the Mocs.
The berth for UAB comes as the fifth-straight, after the Blazers' current run of NCAA tournament appearances began in 2010. UAB claimed its first-ever regional title, the NCAA Louisville Regional, a season ago, en route to its first-ever super regional appearance.
