BOCA RATON, Fla. - The UAB softball team (31-24, 15-8 C-USA) will open play at the Conference USA Championship in Boca Raton, Fla. on Thursday at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT against the No. 7 Seed Marshall at the FAU Softball Stadium.
The No. 2 seed Blazers and Thundering Herd are set to meet for the first time this season, in what will be the opening contest of the C-USA Championship. UAB earned the No. 2 seed with a win at UTSA last Sunday, a series the Blazers took 2-of-3 in for their seventh league series win in eight tries this season. The Thundering Herd earned the No. 7 seed after finishing 13-11 in league action.
The winner of Thursday's first round matchup will advance to the 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT semifinal game on Friday to face the winner of (6) East Carolina vs. (3) FIU. The two teams have met on the diamond 27 times dating back to the 2001 season, as UAB owns the series record, 16-11. The Blazers are 8-2 in the last 10 against the Thundering Herd, but have dropped two to Marshall in the C-USA Championship the last two seasons, both in the second round.
Following a record-setting weekend at UTSA to claim a series win, the Blazers now turn their focus to the Conference USA Championship, set to begin on Thursday, May 8 in Boca Raton, Fla.
UAB closed its regular season on Sunday with its seventh C-USA series win, topping UTSA, 5-3 to clinch the No. 2 seed for the tournament. In that win, UAB broke the home run record after hitting three, to surpass the old mark of 53 and set a new record for most in a single UAB season. Leigh Streetman, after earning the Sunday win, needs just one more victory to become UAB's career wins leader.

Scouting the Competition
Marshall enters the tournament at 26-30 overall and 13-11 to finish regular season C-USA play. The Thundering Herd has four league series wins this season after sweeping FIU, Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee. Marshall took 2-of-3 from East Carolina and dropped three-game sets to Tulsa, North Texas and Charlotte.
The Thundering Herd totals a .292 batting average and has four hitters at .300 or better on the year. Kaelynn Greene leads the way at .391 with a team-best 77 hits and 29 stolen bases in 37 attempts. Morgan Zerkle, the C-USA leader in stolen bases, is hitting .354 with 62 hits and 20 RBI and is 46-of-48 in the stolen base department. Shaelynn Braxton is batting at a clip of .337 with 55 hits, including a team-best 15 home runs with 53 RBI for a .712 slugging percentage. Savanah Webster is hitting .328 with seven long balls and 31 RBI. As a team Marshall is 114-of-143 in stolen bases, doubling its opponents' totals in that category.
The Marshall pitching staff has a 5.12 cumulative ERA, led by Jordan Dixon and Lindsey Fadnek. Dixon is 18-20 on the year with a 4.74 ERA and has allowed 120 earned runs, 119 walks and 220 hits. Fadnek is 8-8 with a 4.43 ERA and 120 hits allowed through 107 IP.
