BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB softball team is set to travel to Kennesaw State on Thursday for a doubleheader at the Bailey Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. CT.
UAB Posts Pair Of Victories Over KSU Tuesday
The UAB softball team posted a pair of victories over Kennesaw State Tuesday at the UAB Softball Field in rainy conditions. The Blazers downed the Owls 6-1 in the opener, before shutting out KSU, 4-0, in the nightcap.
Last Time Out
On Tuesday, the Blazers dropped a 3-2 decision to Alabama State at the UAB Softball Field, snapping the Blazers' program best 11-game home win streak. Senior Whitney Fletcher and sophomore Heather Pearson recorded RBI and the Blazers out-hit the Hornets, 7-5, in the loss.
UAB leads the all-time series with Kennesaw State, 10-2, and has won its last two meetings with the Owls.
On Feb. 28, 2012 at the UAB Softball Field, the Blazers took game one of the doubleheader, 6-1, on nine hits, including one home run. Lannah Campbell picked up the win, throwing 6.0 innings and striking out seven, while Lauren Webster ended the game, throwing nine pitches and striking out one batter in the top of the seventh.
In the second game, pitcher Leigh Streetman allowed only four hits in the 4-0 shutout win. The Blazers scored its four runs on nine hits, including a double to left by Whitney Fletcher and singles by Kristen McGrath and Kate Armstrong.
Scouting Kennesaw State
The Owls are 30-17 on the year and have won three of their last five matchups, including their Atlantic Sun Conference series with Jacksonville.
Over the weekend, Kennesaw State swept the doubleheader with Jacksonville, taking game one, 10-4, as the Owls took advantage of four Jacksonville errors. In the second game, Kennesaw State scored one run in the bottom of the second of the 1-0 win, while pitcher Abbey Mixon threw a complete game, allowing four hits and striking out five batters in the shutout.
Despite being out-hit, 8-3, in the finale, the Owls used were boosted by home runs by Angie Dascoli in the second and fourth innings of the 4-3 win.
On Wednesday, the Owls will take on Georgia Tech before returning home for their matchup with the Blazers.
Sharon Swanson leads the squad with a .354 batting average, nine home runs and 30 RBI. In the circle, Amanda Henderson leads the pitching staff with a record of 17-4 and an ERA of 1.81 in 154.1 innings. Henderson has allowed 40 earned runs and struck out 182.
This weekend, the Blazers will resume Conference USA action, hosting Marshall for a three-game series on April 27-28. Saturday's doubleheader is set for a 1 p.m. CT start, while Sunday's finale has a Noon CT first pitch.
Admission to Saturday's games, which follow the UAB Football Spring Game at West Campus Field, are free. The football FanFest will begin at 9 a.m. CT while the football scrimmage is set for an 11 a.m. CT start.
Saturday's softball games will recognize Cancer Awareness Day, and prior to the game, members of the UAB Athletic department--Amy Nicholas (Academics), Hal Messersmith (Volleyball) and Norm Reilly (Media Relations)--will throw out the ceremonial first pitches.
Following Sunday's game, UAB's senior class will be recognized for the performance throughout both the season and their careers in Green and Gold.
