BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team (27-19, 11-6 C-USA) will close out its home schedule this weekend as it hosts Charlotte Friday and Saturday at the UAB Softball Field.
The Blazers are 12-6 this season at home and 5-3 at home in Conference USA action. Three wins will give head Marla Townsend and the program 450 as Townsend is already the active leader in C-USA wins of any coach in the league with 175.
Friday’s doubleheader is slated to begin at 4 p.m. while Saturday’s game will start at 1 p.m.

The Blazers lead the all-time series, 15-4. The two teams last squared off in 2005 when Charlotte took 2-of-3 from UAB in North Carolina. UAB is 7-2 in Birmingham against the 49ers and have won three of the last five in the series.
UAB will host Charlotte in its home finale this weekend at the UAB Softball Field. The Blazers will welcome the 49ers to the UAB Softball Field on Friday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader and close the series and the home schedule with Senior Day at 1 p.m. Saturday.
UAB will honor its four seniors on Saturday - Kristen McGrath, Megan McGrath, Leigh Streetman and Lannah Campbell - following the conclusion of the series finale at 1 p.m. Friday’s doubleheader will also coincide with UAB athletics’ Blazer Block Party, being held in conjunction with UAB football’s spring game at 6 p.m. Friday night at West Campus Field.
The Green and Gold enter the Conference USA weekend in third place in the league standings. Tulsa leads the way at 12-2, while North Texas, who UAB swept in Denton, is second at 12-5. Charlotte sits 10th in the league fighting for a top-8 spot to qualify for the C-USA tournament.
Scouting the Competition
Charlotte enters the Conference USA weekend in 10th in the league standings at 16-22 overall and 7-10 in league action. The 49ers are fresh off a series loss to Florida Atlantic, but took 2-of-3 from UTSA in San Antonio to begin the month.
The 49ers’ RPI sits at 154th in the NCAA. FIU, East Carolina and Florida Atlantic all took 2-of-3 from the 49ers, while the 49ers' series wins include UTSA and a two-game sweep over Middle Tennessee.
Charlotte has four hitters at .300 or better at the plate, led by Jackie Kleinsmith who is hitting .342 on the season with five home runs and 29 RBI. Samantha Slade checks in hitting .328 with eight doubles, seven home runs and 22 RBI, while Jessica Plemmons has the team lead in home runs with eight.
The 49ers rely heavily on their ace Lexi Betancourt, who’s thrown 168 innings of work this season. She is 15-11 with 19 complete-game performances with a 2.29 ERA. She’s allowed 162 hits, 55 earned runs, walked 76 and struck out 160. Teams are hitting .247 against her and have totaled 32 extra-base hits against Betancourt. Chelsea Lisikatos and Mackenzie Hauser have each thrown less than 50 innings for the 49ers and have a 5.76 ERA and 12.09 ERA, respectively.
UAB No. 21 In NCAA In Fielding Percentage
The Blazers’ .972 fielding percentage ranks 21st in the country. The above-.970 mark is UAB’s highest of any single season in program history. Just three of UAB’s 2014 opponents rank higher on the list of fielding percentage’s, led by Jacksonville State who is No. 5 nationally with a .980.
