Middle Tennessee Sweeps Double-Header From UAB Softball

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee swept a double header from UAB on Wednesday, setting a school record in the process as pitchers Jennifer Martinez and Stayc Preator combined to extend their streak of scoreless innings to 39 straight.

Martinez threw a six-inning shutout in game one of the double-header, increasing her personal scoreless innings streak to 20 as the Lady Raiders won 8-0.

The Lady Raiders posted four runs in the first two innings. Martinez allowed only one runner to reach third base. She struck out seven in the six-inning one-hit shutout.

Kelli Thompson (8-14) started game one for UAB, allowing four complete innings, allowing five runs on six hits, with five walks and three strikeouts. Mandie Wyatt worked the final inning for the Blazers, allowing two runs on three hits.

Center fielder Cliffanie Engram collected the only UAB hit of game one with a single up the middle off Martinez in the top of the first inning.

Middle Tennessee scored in the first inning of game two when Kip Phillips led off with a single and later scored on a passed ball.

Preator held UAB scoreless through five innings before two errors on the same play allowed the Blazers their only run of the day. Amanda Ellis pinch hit for Emily Scarbrough, reached on an error by center fielder Phillips, advanced to third and scored on an error by shortstop Steffi Silva.

UAB starter Kerri Foster held the Lady Raiders scoreless until the bottom of the eighth when Jennifer Martinezhit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Lisa Sherman for a 2-1 win.

Foster (9-10) worked seven and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs (both unearned) on six hits, with one walk and 12 strikeouts.

The Lady Raiders, who entered Wednesday's games with the nation's seventh-longest current winning streak, has now won six straight to improve to 27-14 overall.

UAB continues its road trip Friday and Saturday with a three-game C-USA series at Saint Louis, and returns home to host Florida State in a double-header Sunday at George Ward Park, beginning at 1:00 pm.
