BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Following a 3-0 weekend in Conference USA play on the road, the UAB softball team (20-14, 8-4) has moved up six positions in the NCAA Softball RPI rankings to a program-best No. 26 spot.
The Blazers were tabbed No. 32 in last week’s first release of the year, as this week’s ranking of 26th tops UAB’s program-best No. 29 spot, which the Blazers finished with following the completion of last season.
Seven of UAB’s 2014 opponents rank in the top-25, led by Alabama who moved to No. 1 in the RPI with a 31-5 record. Georgia, who UAB split games with at the Bulldog Invitational including an 8-0 shutout, checks in at No. 3. Missouri is No. 8, while South Alabama, who UAB has played twice already this season, rounds out the top-10 at No. 10. Baylor is ranked No. 12, while UAB’s Conference USA opponent this upcoming weekend, Tulsa, is No. 20. Oklahoma, a team UAB will face in late April, checks in to the top-25 at No. 23.
Four other teams on UAB’s 2014 schedule rank within the top-50, including McNeese State (No. 30), Lipscomb (No. 35), Mississippi State (No. 39) and FIU (No. 48). The Blazers dropped their only contest to McNeese in extra innings back in the first tournament of the season, but have three wins in four games combined against Mississippi State and FIU.
The Blazers will be back in action Tuesday with a 6 p.m. home contest against Jacksonville State to begin a span of six games over the next six days.
