BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Winners of eight of its last 10 games, the UAB softball team (15-13, 3-3 C-USA) will welcome the FIU Panthers to the UAB Softball Field for a three-game series this weekend.
Game one of the three-game set will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday with a doubleheader, followed by the series finale, which is slated for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
Live stats and video will be available at www.UABsports.com. Saturday’s promotion is Youth League Day, while Sunday’s promotional is Strike Out Cancer.
The Blazers and Panthers have met twice all-time. Both contests were played in Miami, as UAB dropped the first meeting, 3-0, on Feb. 11, 2005 and won the second, 6-4, on Feb. 12, 2012.
Senior Kristen McGrath Takes Over In Two UAB Career Records
With her home run at the Bulldog Invitational, Kristen McGrath became UAB’s new all-time leader in career home runs with 33. She now has 38 in her career. After hitting a two-run shot in UAB’s 5-2 win over Murray State (3/20), McGrath also moved into first in the UAB all-time RBI list with 127.
Senior Kristen McGrath hit homers in back-to-back-to-back games March 9-12. McGrath homered in the series finale at ECU, and launched long balls against WKU and Ball State. Her twin sister, Megan, has five in the last week, including two in the series against FAU and two in UAB’s 21-2 win at Jacksonville State. Caitlin Attfield has shots in back-to-back games, both three-run blasts (3/18 at Jacksonville State, 3/20 vs. Murray State).
Blazers Score Early, Double Up Opponents In First and Fifth Innings
38 percent of UAB’s total runs (121) have come in the first and fifth innings combined. The Blazers are outscoring opponents 25-10 in the first inning and 22-11 in the fifth. UAB is 6-4 when scoring in the first inning and 11-7 when scoring first. Of 28 total games, UAB has scored in the first in 10 of those and in the fifth in 12.
Of the regular seven innings, UAB is outscoring its opponent in five, including the second (20-16), third (17-15) and sixth (10-8), while opponents are outscoring the Blazers in the fourth (11-9) and seventh (8-7) innings.
Scouting the Competition
FIU enters the weekend series having played only six games outside the state of Florida. After playing 16-straight in Miami to begin the season, the Panthers stepped out of their home city to play in Tempe, Arizona at the Louisville Slugger Tournament. FIU will play just its seventh true road game on Saturday to begin the three-game set.
The Panthers are 0-3 against common UAB opponents this season, dropping contests to Ball State (8-6) and McNeese State twice (9-1 and 5-3).
Stephanie Texeira, Krystal Garcia, Gabby Spallone, Rebekah Sanchez and Aleima Lopez lead FIU offensively. Texeira has the team-lead in home runs and RBI with six and 23, while Garcia and Spallone each have four long balls. FIU has 38 stolen bases thus far, led by Bre Kaye who is 11-for-12. Sanchez checks in at 6-for-6 on the base paths.
Corinne Jenkins has tossed the most innings for FIU this season with 83.1 thus far, while Shelby Graves has thrown 80.2. Jenkins is 10-3 with a 2.10 ERA, seven complete games and two shutouts. She has allowed 25 earned runs, walked 28 and struck out 48. Graves is 8-5 with a 2.69 ERA with 20 walks and 58 strikeouts.
