March 19, 2014
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Winners of seven of its last 10 games, the UAB softball team (14-13, 3-3 C-USA) will host the Murray State Racers on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the UAB Softball Field.
The contest will begin a four-game homestand for the Blazers, as UAB will jump back into Conference USA play this weekend with a three-game set against FIU.
The game’s promotion is Faculty and Staff Appreciation night. Live stats and video will be available at www.UABsports.com.
The Blazers and Racers have met three times dating back to the 2011 season. UAB topped Murray State, 2-0, last season in Birmingham and the two teams split a doubleheader in March of 2011.
Senior Kristen McGrath has 125 RBI in her career, including a team-high 23 this season. McGrath needs just one more RBI to tie the UAB all-time RBI record of 126 and two to break Mandy Lowman’s record, which she set from 2009-12.
UAB Goes Yard
After only totaling four home runs through the first 13 games, the Blazers have hit 15 in their last 10 games dating back to the C-USA opener at East Carolina on March 8. UAB has hit at least two home runs in the same game on five different occasions - Feb. 15 vs. Iowa, March 1 vs. Western Carolina, March 11 vs. WKU, March 15 vs. FAU, March 18 at Jacksonville State - four games in which UAB won.
Blazers Score Early, Double Up Opponents In First and Fifth Innings
41 percent of UAB’s total runs (116) have come in the first and fifth innings combined. The Blazers are outscoring opponents 25-10 in the first inning and 22-11 in the fifth. UAB is 6-4 when scoring in the first inning and 10-7 when scoring first. Of 27 total games, UAB has scored in the first in 10 of those and in the fifth in 12.
Of the regular seven innings, UAB is outscoring its opponent in four, including the third (17-15) and sixth (10-6), while opponents are outscoring the Blazers in the second (16-15), fourth (11-9) and seventh (8-7) innings.
Record Night for UAB in 21-2 Rout Over Jacksonville State
UAB’s bats came alive in a 21-2 rout over Jacksonville State on March 18. Five different Blazers hit home runs as UAB tied its all-time single game home run record of six - The last time the feat was accomplished was March 18, 2012 vs. Kentucky in a 20-7 win (also tied for the fifth-most in a single game in NCAA history).
On top of the home runs, UAB also drew 11 walks, which ties the all-time single game record set on March 3, 2012 vs. Maryland. The 21-run output are the most runs scored by UAB since Feb. 24, 2002 when the Blazers scored an all-time high 25 against Alabama A&M. The 19-run advantage also ties for the largest defeat dating back to March 3, 2012 in a 19-0 win over Massachusetts. The 21 runs were the most Jacksonville State has ever given up in program history, as 10 of UAB’s season-high 14 hits produced an RBI.
