UAB Notes
The Series
UAB and Western Kentucky have split its four meetings all time in program history. The Blazers won the first two back in 2008 in a doubleheader in Birmingham, but the Hilltoppers won the previous two meetings, 3-2 and 6-0, to even the series at 2-2 entering Tuesday.

UAB has never defeated Ball State, as the Cardinals own a 3-0 record against the Green and Gold. The two teams last met in 2010 when Ball State edged UAB, 3-2, in Clearwater, Fla.

Road Warriors No More, Blazers Return Home
Following a nine-game road swing dating back to Feb. 28, UAB returns home for 10 of its next 11 beginning on Tuesday against Western Kentucky. The Blazers finished 5-4 over the previous road trip, picking up notable wins over SEC foes No. 18 Georgia and a Mississippi State team that was 19-1 entering the contest with the Blazers.

Through the first 20 games, the Blazers were home just twice, but they will play 10 of their 22 total home games over the next two weeks. UAB is 173-131 all-time at the UAB softball field entering the home stand.

Established Freshmen
Of eight freshmen on this year’s UAB squad, two have looked to have settled in - Danii Fernandez and Mary Warren.

Warren, the Blazers’ designated player, has made her mark early, driving in six runs at the Getterman Classic, including her first-career home run. For her efforts she was named to the Getterman Classic All-Tournament Team.

Fernandez, who began the season entering as a pinch runner, has started six-straight games at third for UAB. UAB’s nine-hole hitter has raised her season average to .316, second best on the team, and was one of the top Blazers offensively in the C-USA opener at East Carolina, going 3-for-8 (.375). She also leads the team in runs scored on the season with 10 through just seven games started.

Scouting the Competition
Western Kentucky comes to Birmingham following a 4-1 weekend at the Tennessee Vols’ tournament in Knoxville. The Hilltoppers are 15-7-1 on the year and have a 1-2-1 road record after playing in five consecutive tournaments.

Amanda Thomas and Kelsie Mattox lead the Hilltoppers offensively. Thomas has two home runs and 21 RBI, while Mattox has 15 RBI and two long balls. The WKU pitching staff is led by Hannah Miniard and Emily Rousseau. Rousseau has an 8-5 record through 88 innings pitched, and has thrown nine complete games with a 2.55 ERA. Miniard has a 2.10 ERA through 50 innings and has tossed three shutouts and five complete games.

Ball State continues an eight-game road swing in the state of Alabama in Wednesday’s doubleheader against UAB. The Cardinals are 12-4 this season and have yet to play a home game. The Cardinals’ Alabama trip begins on Tuesday with a game at Jacksonville State, as they will then travel to Auburn for the War Eagle Classic this weekend.

Jennifer Gilbert has the team lead in RBI for BSU with 21, while Kelsey Schifferdecker is 6-0 in the circle.
