BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB's Alisha Smith was named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday. This marks the first weekly honor for the senior pitcher.
Smith (3-1) picked up a pair of victories and did not allow an earned run in three appearances at the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech in Woodstock, Ga. last weekend. The Springville, Ala., product surrendered seven hits, no earned runs and struck out 14 batters in 13.1 innings in the circle.
Smith pitched seven innings in UAB's extra-inning 1-0 victory over UMass to open the tournament, allowing just one hit and striking out eight. She also picked up the win against UNC Greensboro after stepping in and allowing no earned runs and five hits in the final 3.2 innings. The right-handed pitcher also tossed the final 2.2 innings against Georgia Tech and surrendered just one hit.
Smith now owns a 1.71 ERA for the season and has held opponents to a .172 batting average.
Smith and the rest of the UAB softball team will return to action Tuesday, hosting Lipscomb for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. CT at UAB Softball Field.
