BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-- The UAB softball team returns to action this weekend, co-hosting the Magic City Classic with Samford, March 1-3 at the UAB Softball Field.
The Blazers will take on Nicholls State on Friday and Sunday, with both first pitches set for 2:30 p.m. CT. The Blazers will see South Alabama on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. before taking on Samford with an approximate start time of 5 p.m. CT. On Sunday, the Blazers will also take on Murray State at 12: 15 p.m. CT.
UAB Softball Takes Title At Magic City Classic
The UAB softball team defeated Nicholls State, 7-2, Sunday to take the title at the Magic City Classic hosted by Samford. The Blazers (9-4) beat Troy, Alabama State, Samford and Nicholls State by a combined score of 30-8 to go undefeated in the tournament. This marks the sixth time the Blazers have won the Magic City Classic since its start eight years ago.
Wild Weather Last week, the Blazers were set for a pair of doubleheaders at Alabama State and Kennesaw State, but inclement weather forced both sets of games to be postponed.
UAB will now take on Kennesaw State on Tuesday, March 5 at 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET, while the doubleheader at Alabama State has been rescheduled for March 19 at 1 p.m. CT.
Last Time Out After nine games on the road, UAB opened its home slate by hosting defending national champion Alabama. The Crimson Tide jumped out to a quick, 5-0, lead before pitcher Jackie Traina gave up three consecutive walks to load the bases for senior catcher Anna Kimbrellin the fourth inning. The Fort Mill, S.C., native hit a grand slam over left field to cut the lead to one.
The Blazers got runners on base three more times, but Alabama came out with the win, 8-4.
For the game, UAB recorded its second-highest attendance of 1,204 fans. The Blazers' biggest crowd (1,323) came during the 2010 season, also against Alabama. In fact, four of UAB's top-five crowds have been in contests against the SEC opponent.
Scouting Nicholls State The Colonels are currently 7-7 after posting a 3-1 record at the Blues City Classic in Southaven, Miss.
On Saturday, Nicholls State defeated Indiana State, 3-0, before taking an 8-7 win over Southeast Missouri State. On Sunday, the Colonels fell to UMKC, 16-3, in five innings before defeating Belmont, 3-2.
UAB holds a 5-0 lead in the all-time series against Nicholls State. The squads last met on Feb. 28, 2010 in Birmingham, and the Blazers won 7-2.
Scouting Murray State Winners of three of their last five, the Racers are currently 4-5 on the season.
Over the weekend, Murray State took three wins at the Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. The Racers defeated Louisiana Monroe twice (4-1, 10-2), and also took a 9-4 win over Saint Louis.
Sophomore infielder Alexa Becker leads the squad with a .385 batting average, while sophomore outfielder Casey Castile has totaled 10 RBI on the season.
UAB and Murray State are even in the all-time series at 1-1. The teams last met on March 15, 2011, with the Blazers taking the first game, 4-0, and the Racers won the second meeting, 2-0.
Scouting South Alabama The Jaguars are 13-1 on the season and are sitting on a 12-game win streak as the squad faces Alabama on Thursday.
Last time out, South Alabama won four games at the Jacksonville University Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla.
Sophomore catcher Alex Breeden leads the South Alabama starters with a .400 batting average and 11 RBI. Junior pitcher Hannah Campbell, UAB pitcher Lannah Campbell'stwin sister, has a .71 ERA and a record of 5-1.
South Alabama leads the all-time series with UAB, 5-2, and has won the last three meetings, including the 1-0 win on March 14, 2012 in Birmingham. The Blazers last defeated the Jaguars, 6-0, on Feb. 21, 2010 in Mobile, Ala.
Scouting Samford The Bulldogs are 6-7 on the season, and winners of three of their last six games.
Last time out, Samford lost to Alabama, 11-0, in five innings.
Sophomore catcher Madison Dickey leads the team with a .385 batting average and six RBI,
UAB leads the all-time series against Samford, 26-5. The Blazers are currently on a nine-game win streak over the Bulldogs, and last defeated the squad twice (12-4 and 8-0) on April 10, 2012 in Birmingham.
