BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team (3-8) opens a nine-game road swing on Friday at the 6th Annual Bulldog Invitational hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens. The Blazers will play their first of five games Friday morning at 9 a.m. CT against Western Carolina (3-8).
Following game one to open the tournament, UAB will face St. John’s (4-5) at 11:30 a.m. CT on Friday to cap the first day of competition. The Blazers will then face the Catamounts of Western Carolina at 9 a.m. CT Saturday morning before squaring off with tournament host and No. 18 Georgia (12-1) at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday. UAB’s tournament play for 2014 will conclude with an 11:30 a.m. CT contest against the Bulldogs on Sunday.
Scouting the Competition
No. 18 Georgia enters the weekend with a 12-1 overall record. The Bulldogs won 11 straight to open the season and shut out seven of those opponents before dropping a 3-2 decision to South Alabama. The Bulldogs are coming off the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla., where they finished 3-1.
St. John’s enters the Bulldog Invitational with a 4-5 overall mark. The Red Storm have picked up wins over Ohio State, Florida Atlantic, UMKC and Jackson State, and dropped decisions to Tulsa, Northern Illinois, Louisville and Arkansas twice.
Western Carolina began its 2014 campaign with an 0-6 start but has since won three games to improve its record to 3-8. The Catamounts have picked up victories over Liberty (twice) and Winthrop, and have been shut out five times so far through 11 games.
UAB’s three opponents this weekend own a 19-14 combined record and have only played one combined ranked opponent when Georgia fell to South Alabama, 3-2.
With her home run at the Getterman Classic, Kristen McGrath is now tied for first on the UAB all-time list in career home runs with 32. She also is in the top-10 in RBI with 110 for her career, which ranks No. 5 on the UAB list.
Including this weekend’s play at the Bulldog Invitational, UAB will have had just two home games through the first 16 to begin the 2014 campaign. In true road games, the Blazers are 0-2 and 3-4 in neutral site matchups. Out of 34 total games away from the UAB Softball Field during the 2014 season, the Blazers will have played in 14 of those once play is completed at this weekend’s tournament.
UAB One of C-USA TV Games Selected
UAB’s rubber game against East Carolina on March 9 at 11 a.m. has been selected as one of four regular season conference games to be featured nationally on the family of Fox Sports’ Networks. The Blazers/Pirates game on 3/9 marks the first of four to be played on Fox Sports, as the C-USA Championship Game is slated to be aired on the CBS Sports Network on May 10 at 11 a.m. CT.
7 Innings Aren’t Enough
UAB played in its sixth extra-inning game of the young season on Feb. 19 in a 2-1, 11-inning loss to No. 19 South Alabama. The 11-inning marathon marked the third-straight extra-inning (at the time) game for UAB, and sixth overall. The Blazers are 1-5 overall in extra innings, and have now eclipsed last year’s extra-inning game total of four through just 10 games this season.
