Seven Innings Aren’t Enough
UAB played its sixth extra-inning game of the young season last Wednesday in a 2-1, 11-inning loss to No. 19 South Alabama. The 11-inning marathon marked the third-straight extra-inning game for UAB, and sixth overall. The Blazers are 1-5 overall in extra innings, and have now eclipsed last year’s extra-inning game total of four through just 10 games this season.
The Blazers are being outscored 23-20 in extra-inning games, and 1-4 when tied after six innings of play. UAB has outscored opponents 6-4 in the ninth inning, but has been outscored a combined 9-4 in the seventh and eighth innings.
With her home run at the Getterman Classic, Kristen McGrath is now tied for first on the UAB all-time list in career home runs with 32. She also is in the top-10 in RBI with 110 for her career, which ranks No. 5 on the UAB list.
UAB Facing Nation’s Top Teams
Of UAB’s opponents this season, seven are ranked in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll. Oklahoma, ranked No. 18, will welcome the Blazers in late April for a three-game set. In-state foe Alabama, UAB’s opponent Feb. 25, is No. 9 and will welcome the Blazers to Tuscaloosa April 9.
Baylor, who UAB lost to on a walk-off home run in nine innings at the Getterman Classic, is ranked No. 15. South Alabama, who UAB fell to 2-1 in 11 innings in the home opener, is ranked No. 19, while Georgia, the host of UAB’s third tournament (Feb. 28 - March 2) is No. 17.
