BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 21 UAB softball team will make its 2014 season debut Thursday as the Blazers start the year against No. 20 South Alabama at 6 p.m. CT at Jaguar Field.

Following their opening game against the Jaguars, the Blazers will square off against McNeese State at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7 in the tournament’s first game of the day. UAB will close the weekend with games against Austin Peay at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, and Syracuse at 3:45 p.m.

Conference USA Preseason Honors

The Blazers, led by reigning C-USA Coach of the Year Marla Townsend, return reigning C-USA Freshman of the Year Caitlin Attfield, who was also named preseason all-conference, and preseason all-conference selection Lannah Campbell, who was named First-Team All-Conference last season. The McGrath sisters of Kristen and Megan also return for their senior campaigns, along with senior pitcher Leigh Streetman to lead the 2014 squad.

Blazers Solid in Season Openers

Dating back to the program’s start in 2000, UAB is 10-4 in season openers. The Blazers knocked off No. 16 Washington in 2013, 4-3, to open the memorable 2013 campaign. UAB begins this season with a tough test against No. 20 South Alabama.

UAB Earns National Attention

For the first time in school history, the Blazers have been named in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Preseason Poll. UAB finished last season as the No. 16 team in the country, and boast a No. 21 ranking entering the 2014 season.

The Blazers were also tabbed as the Preseason Coaches’ Conference USA choice to win the 2014 league championship for the first time in school history.

UAB Facing Nation’s Top Teams

Of UAB’s opponents this season, five are ranked in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Preseason Poll. Oklahoma, ranked No. 2, will welcome the Blazers in late April for a three-game set. In-state foe Alabama is No. 6 and will face UAB twice.

UAB will travel to Waco, Texas Feb. 14-16 for the Getterman Classic, hosted by Baylor, who is ranked No. 16. South Alabama, UAB’s opening opponent, is ranked No. 20, while Georgia, the host of UAB’s third tournament (Feb. 28 - March 2) is No. 23.

The Campbell Twins

UAB senior pitcher Lannah Campbell and twin sister Hannah Campbell of South Alabama have had prolific careers in the circle for their respective programs. Hannah was named to the NFCA All-South Region First Team in 2013, and became the program’s first-ever All-American after being named to the 2013 NFCA Division I All-American Second Team.

Hannah’s sister, Lannah, was named to the All-Conference USA First Team and earned a spot on the 2013 NFCA Mideast Region Second Team following the 2013 season. She was named preseason all-conference by Conference USA prior to the 2014 season, and is one of UAB’s two top pitchers entering the 2014 campaign.
