TULSA, Okla. --- The UAB softball team fell to Southern Miss, 3-1, Friday and was eliminated from the 2006 Conference USA Softball Championship in Tulsa at the Donna J. Hardesty Softball Complex. The Blazers collected three hits including a solo home run by freshman Andrea Rogers. UAB finishes the championship with a 31-22 overall mark and 15-9 in conference play.
Southern Miss (29-37) scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI triple by Jessica Huerta and a sacrifice fly by Allison Bullard. The Golden Eagles had two hits in the frame and left a runner on base. USM had three hits in the third inning and plated another run. Jennifer Fox singled through the left side of the infield to score Ashley Brenan.
Rogers hit her ninth home run of the year in the sixth inning over the centerfield fence to cut into the USM lead. Rogers was the only run of the day for the Blazers and added to her single-season record for home runs. She went 1-for-2 in the game and had one of three hits for UAB.
Jennifer Nelson took the loss and fell to 15-11 overall after pitching 4.1 innings. Nelson allowed eight hits and three runs against USM. Amanda Antonovich came on in relief and shutdown the Golden Eagles in 1.2 innings.
UAB finishes one of the greatest seasons in school history. The Blazers finished 31-22 overall and had the second most wins all-time.
