BOCA RATON, Fla. - The No. 2 seed UAB softball team (31-25) fell to No. 7 seed Marshall, 4-0, on Thursday at the FAU Softball Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla. in the first round of the Conference USA Championship.
"Obviously, I am disappointed in our failure to execute our game plan offensively, until late in the game," head coach Marla Townsend said. "Defensively, we had a few miscues that are uncharacteristic of us and it allowed a competitive team to capitalize during the fifth inning."
The two teams played to a scoreless contest through the first four innings, before Marshall broke through with a four-run fifth to take the 4-0 advantage and win.
UAB totaled eight hits and struck out nine times to leave 10 runners on base, while Marshall finished with 10 hits.
Sophomore Caitlin Attfield, who was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team earlier on Thursday, went 3-for-4 for her 26th multiple-hit game and her fourth game with at least three hits this season. Danii Fernandez, a selection to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team on Wednesday, did her job at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two singles and a fielder's choice, for her 12th multiple-hit game of the season. Kristen McGrath also finished 2-for-4, including a double in the fifth and a two-out single in the seventh.
Senior Leigh Streetman got the start for UAB and tossed five innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs. She struck out four as Lannah Campbell entered in relief to throw the final two innings and allow just one hit with three strikeouts.
No. 7 Marshall 4, No. 2 UAB 0
The two teams played to a scoreless contest through four innings, until Marshall broke through with a four-run fifth to put the first runs up on the board.
The Blazers stranded five runners through the first three innings, leaving runners at first and second with one out in both the first and third frames.
The Thundering Herd broke through in the fifth, totaling six hits, four that never left the infield, to plate the game's only four runs.
The inning began with a hard single to third base, before a fielder's choice occurred at second for the first out of the inning. Marshall then hit another single to third, before Kaelynn Greene chopped a single off the plate to load the bases. Shaelynn Braxton then singled in the infield to plate a Marshall run and keep the bases loaded. Savanah Webster followed with a single of her own, this time a ball that went out of the infield dirt to center. A run scored on that play to make it 2-0, before Raquel Escareno singled through to left to plate the final two runs of the frame, in what would be the 4-0 final score for the contest.
