EL PASO, Texas --- The UAB softball team fell to UTEP Sunday, 5-1, in the regular season finale at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex in El Paso. The Blazers finished tied for second in the Conference USA standings and advanced to their first conference tournament since the 2003 season. UAB finished the season with a 31-20 overall mark and went 15-9 in C-USA.
"We felt like we had the players to play for a conference championships and it came down to the final weekend," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "We are looking forward to the conference tournament and having a chance to go to advance to NCAA play. I'm extremely proud of this team for what they have accomplished this season."
The Miners broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning after plating two runs, on two hits. UTEP scored another run in the third and two more in the fifth and held on for a 5-1 victory. The Miners also collected nine hits in the game.
UAB had four hits and scored its only run in the fourth inning. Freshman Kayla Harris went 1-for-3 with an RBI double that scored junior Nicole Whitlock. Whitlock was 1-for-2 against the Miners with a run scored. The Blazers left seven runners on-base in the game compared to the Miners 11.
UAB starter Jennifer Nelson lasted 2.1 innings and took the loss. Nelson gave up three runs on four hits and fell to 15-9. Amanda Antonovich came on in relief and pitched 3.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits. Brittany Hodge pitched the final out in the bottom of the sixth for UAB.
The fourth seeded Blazers will return to action Thursday when they face fifth-seed East Carolina in the first round of the conference tournament in Tulsa, Okla. Complete coverage of UAB athletics can be found at www.uabsports.com.
