UAB plays for a Conference USA Championship Sundat at UTEP

EL PASO, Texas ---The UAB softball team swept UTEP in a doubleheader Saturday in El Paso and will battle for the schools first regular-season championship Sunday in the series finale. The Blazers defeated the Miners, 5-1, in game one and dominated the nightcap, 7-1. UAB improved to 31-19 overall and 15-8 in Conference USA. UTEP falls to 22-32 this season and 7-14 in the conference.
UTEP had two hits in the first inning of game one and scored its only run before UAB starter Jennifer Nelson dominated the final six frames. Nelson went the distance, striking out 13 and improving to 15-8 on the season. Nelson became the first Blazers to reach the 200 strikeout plateau and finished the game with 206 strikeouts this year.
The Blazers came alive offensively against the Miners and scored five runs in the final four innings to seal the victory. UAB had nine hits in the game including a two-run home run by freshman Andrea Rogers. Rogers became the single-season home run holder after blasting her eighth long ball of the year in the fifth inning.
UAB opened game two with three runs in the first inning and cruised to a doubleheader sweep over the UTEP. The Blazers plated two more in the third and sixth innings and held on to win, 7-1.
UAB junior Nicole Whitlock and sophomore Holly Krzan both had two hits in game two. The Blazers scored seven runs on eight hits in the game and had 17 hits in the doubleheader. Krzan also collected an RBI in game two and moved into a tie for first on the RBI single-season list (39).
Freshman Kayla Harris started game two and went three innings allowing a run on two hits. Sophomore Amanda Antonovich came on in relief and was the winning pitcher, improving to 4-2 this year. Antonovich pitched the final four innings and puzzled the Miners, only allowing three hits and striking out three.
